The Parents' Birthday Dinner

No, my fellow Chinese foodies, we didn't have this giant garoupa for dinner (damn!)...

....nor this stingray. You're not seeing double on this blog either. I did return to Ocean Restaurant and this is uncannily a similar shot to my earlier visit

This time, I brought my family to celebrate the birthday of mum and dad with the fishees. :)

Amuse Bouche came in the form of a small cup of creamy Clam Chowder with a nutty flavour.

The starter of Alaskan Crab Salad ($30) was very delicate with light, clean flavours. Chilled corn soup, avocado and salmon roe completed the dish. I think it was a tad under-salted for more flavours to come forth.

I mooch preferred the Butternut Pumpkin & Hokkaido Scallop ($30). The creamy, sweet butternut pumpkin soup was comforting and the scallop well seared. A dollop of creme fraiche added rich, freshness while the sprinkling of curry spice gave an interesting note.

On to the mains, the Braised Beef Short-Ribs ($68) of the M6 wagyu striploin were delicious. Tender with a slight gelatinous texture, it was robust, beefy and balanced. This cow was happy to be cannibalising on this plated cow. Moohehe.

The Baked Cod Fillet & Lobster Tempura ($68) was another hit. A thick slab of cod fish was pan-fried nicely to spot a crisp, browned top which gave away to moist, oily white flesh. Neighbour to the cod was the lobster tempura- lightly-battered exterior and succulent inside.

Dad seemed to enjoy his Seared Kurobuta Pork Belly & Fried Octopus with Apple-Sauerkraut Puree and Cabbage Roll ($60). I tried a piece of the pork belly and it was moist with a good ratio of meat and fat. Its taste rounded and full.

I was surprised by the relatively affordable pricing of Ocean Restaurant's housepour wines ($45-$55 per bottle). We opted for the Paringa Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 ($45 per bottle). Nothing fancy but a simple medium-bodied wine with plenty of berries and plums.

Dessert turned out to be my biggest disappointment. Dark Chocolate Brownie Pistachio Puree & Ice Cream ($25) was rather uninspiring. The drop of dark chocolate ganache in the background was the best thing on the plate.

Blessed birthday to Cow Peh and Cow Bu!

Thank you Jesus for my family. Though we are not perfect and have our issues, like every other family, I am thankful for a family.

Ocean Restaurant, I wasn't quite won over by your food the first round in February but this time on my own visit, it was so mooch better! Who says the food at media tastings are always better? :p

But if all else fails, at least there's the beautiful table side view that no other restaurant here can provide. And I think this is still their main draw.
