A simple lunch with tasty food makes a good lunch. And if it's easy on the pocket and satisfying too, it makes for repeats!
That was what I felt at Hong Hu Express after a recent lunch.
The Steamed Dumplings ($5 for bigger serving of 10 pieces) aka shui jiao had a nice skin that was slightly firm to the bite and a tasty filling of minced pork and chives.
Their pan-fried cousins, Dumplings ($8 for a bigger serving of 16 pieces), were terrific! These guo tie (pot-stickers) had a well-fried bottom and a steamed upper portion. The inside was juicy and contained the same tasty mix of minced pork and chives. Dunk into black vinegar with shredded ginger and it was super yums.
On the noodles front, the Hot & Spicy Beef Ramen ($4) was pretty alright with slices of rolled beef that were tender and marbled. I would have preferred a spicier kick though!
The FuZhou Fishball Ramen ($3.50) had a light stock with a generous portion of veggies. The noodles weren't really ramen but more like the you mian variety from ban mian stalls. But they were firm and still good. The Fu Zhou fishballs were a delight to bite into! Bouncy fishball-ness with a minced pork core. Just watch out for pipping hot juices within.
The Minced Meat Ramen ($3) aka zha jiang mian was also decent. A splash of vinegar and a few drops of chilli oil instantly perked this dish up.
Quick, simple, tasty and affordable. Good lunch to me.
